Before you commit your hard earned cash on a new battery it is worth while checking if you actually need to replace it. One question we often get is"My Electric Bike Keeps Cutting out, what causes this?"
Here are some ideas for you.
If your e-bike has a Lithium battery and the battery is more than 3 years old. There is a good chance that you need to replace the battery, But lets try this first.
- If the bike has a battery gauge on the display ride the bike until the battery shows empty or until it cuts out
- Connect the charger and set a timer for 30 Minutes. Return to the charger every 30 minutes until the charging ceases.
You can expect the battery charging time to take between 5 and 6 hours for a 10Ah 36V lithium battery but over the batteries life the charging time and capacity of the battery will diminish. Imagine your battery as a shrinking fuel tank. So the older the battery is the shorter the charging time will be and the shorter the distance per charge.
Why does my electric bike cut out, but then goes again?
While the bike is in a low load situation the battery is not under high demand but when you make it work on a hill it may cut out. The battery has an inbuilt system called a BMS (Battery Management System) it is there to protect the battery and will turn the battery off at approximately 30V
Other reasons for the bike cutting out:
- Loose wiring connection
- Dirty connections where the battery connects to the bike electrical system
- Bent or worn hand brake lever causing the motor cut out feature to malfunction
- Faulty Controller
- Faulty throttle
Ok. So you have determined that you need to replace the battery. Here are some options. If you don't see the one you need give us a call and we will see what we can do to help.

Lithium Ion Electric Bike Batteries
If you are unsure of your battery type and voltage, check both the labels on the battery and your charger output voltage and battery type. Don't be fooled here some labels on chargers may say 42V output this is because most chargers for 36V batteries actually charge to between 42V and 42.8V. To avoid confusion some simply say 36V.
We have five styles of Lithium Ion battery. Frog, Silverfish, Rack Mount Water Bottle and Panasonic. We also have racks for rack mount batteries and mounts with lock and ignition key for frog batteries.
